Can Reflexology help you to lose weight?

It’s a million-dollar question!

First off, let me introduce myself, my names Debbie Stevens and I am an Advanced Reflexologist. I run a successful Award-winning Wellbeing Events Business in West Sussex. Offering Wellbeing in five different ways. Reflexology (1-2-1 & Workshops), Workplace & School Wellbeing, Girls Nights In & Out.

Reflexology & Weight loss;

What is Reflexology and what are the benefits of having treatment?

Reflexology is a holistic therapy created by the Egyptians some 6000 years ago, it works on the principles that every organ and gland is mapped out on the hands, feet, face and ears. By massaging certain areas on the hands, feet, face and ears you can encourage the body’s natural blood flow, remove unwanted toxins and ease pain.

Reflexology is ideal for any age, gender and culture and most conditions.

There are no nasty potions to drink, no needles and you only have to remove your socks and shoes. During the treatment, your therapist will fill in a consultation form, your feet are bathed, and if you are booked in with me, you are snuggled in a lovely soft blanket with soft music playing in the background. It’s a time to stop the clock unwind and relax.

We all know the facts on how to lose weight, we need to move more, eat the right foods and drink plenty of water. Doing this over a period of time, our bodies will naturally tone up and release all the unwanted fat we are carrying around our organs.  In a nutshell, we follow the regime of doing the above and want the scales to move, but unfortunately, muscle weighs heavier than fat and when we don’t see the scales move, we give up.

Hold that thought for a moment, what we haven’t registered is that we feel better, more positive and alive and we are starting to notice our clothes are too big!

How about we change our mindset and look at this in a different way. Let’s not get fixated on what the scales say, lets only weigh ourselves on a monthly basis and go by how our clothes fit.

I’ve been working as a wellbeing practitioner for over 15 years and I am often asked to trial a new ‘wonder’ drink or take up 6-week fitness plan, of course, I am flattered by the offers, but my personal thoughts on this are I can follow the most basic and simple 5 ways to wellbeing steps  by

  • Drinking more water.
  • Moving more.
  • Having a healthy and balanced diet
  • A regular sleep patterns.
  • Listening to my body.

It’s a work in progress and I think the most important factor is to be kind to yourself and do your best to stick to the 5 ways to wellbeing steps.

There has been no research to prove this but like most things holistic, if you are dealing with the overall wellbeing of a person you will address many issues they have. For weight loss to work with reflexology, your reflexologist will need to find and work with the pressure points that correspond to your spleen and digestive organs. This will work your weight loss reflex points.

The techniques I will use will work the following parts of the body:

  1. Spleen reflex points

Stimulating the spleen reflex point can help reduce the hunger feelings you experience therefore helping you to stick to a diet or to stop snacking in-between meals. It will also help with any water retention or bloating you may experience.

  1. Pancreas reflex points

Working on the Pancreas reflex points improves digestion. This can help with bloating and any digestion problems you may experience.

  1. Gall bladder reflex point

As the gall bladder is the organ in the body that stores bile, it is important to have a healthy gall bladder when trying to lose weight. Stimulating the gallbladder will help aid digestion.

  1. Key endocrine glands

Keeping your hormones and stress levels balanced will help with sticking to a diet and motivation for exercise. Working with the reflex points associated with your thyroid, pituitary gland and adrenals will all help achieve this.

I will give you some Reflexology homework that you can do in between treatments.

So, to answer everybody’s question on can reflexology help with weight loss, the answer is yes. It can aid a weight loss program you are on, but if you are not exercising regularly and not eating a healthy balanced diet then no amount of reflexology is going to get you to the weight you want. Using reflexology to help you stay on track by balancing the whole wellbeing of the body is where you will see the results. Just by reducing your stress and sleeping better will make a huge change. You are more likely to exercise, stick to a diet, stop grabbing a quick (unhealthy) snack if you get the right balance, and they are two areas that have great results with reflexology.

If the desire is there to start a weight loss and reflexology plan then you are onto a win, win.
